    Is the HP recovery partition necessary?

    Once you have burned recovery discs, it is safe to delete the recovery partition.

    How exactly do you burn a 10gig recovery file onto a dvd that is only half that space?

    I recall that my HP had something called the Recovery Center; it was preinstalled software (found in the program menus) that took me through the process. In fact, your HP should have come with a pamphlet that instructs you how to make recovery DVDs.

    It's burning the files from the recovery partition to dvds/cds

    It shouldn't be, there is no disc in my DVD drive.

    What are you referring to? Whatever it is, ISO files are perhaps being created.

    You need 2 dvds. After that you can delete the partition but sometimes you need to use Vista's Disk managment to regain the space.
