I'd really like to get my 12 gigs back.

Do you ever want to recover using the data in that partition?
-
Once you have burned recovery discs, it is safe to delete the recovery partition.
-
How exactly do you burn a 10gig recovery file onto a dvd that is only half that space?
-
I recall that my HP had something called the Recovery Center; it was preinstalled software (found in the program menus) that took me through the process. In fact, your HP should have come with a pamphlet that instructs you how to make recovery DVDs.

Oh okay, i'm running that now. It says it's "creating files..."
What exactly is it backing up? -
It's burning the files from the recovery partition to dvds/cds
-
It shouldn't be, there is no disc in my DVD drive.

You need 2 dvds. After that you can delete the partition but sometimes you need to use Vista's Disk managment to regain the space.
Is the HP recovery partition necessary?
