    Hello all,

I'm TRYING to buy this Laptop. However Hp are making it very hard. They are only selling 1 spec version in Oz- A 2.8Ghz, 2GB Ram, 320GB harddisk version.

It's not even listed on the Oz website yet so there's no way to change these options.

The 2.8Ghz CPU is fine for now, but if I wanted to upgrade to a Quad Core later on could I do this does anyone know?

    Regards,
    Simon

The pre-configured T9600 units are cheaper in Australia right now as they are shipping in greater quantities, so the Quad models are delayed. However, if you're willing to pay a premium, a Quad Core version can be built for you. The retail pricing we have for a Quad Core unit is almost $5000 currently. It's not worth the premium.

These will of course be cheaper if you have corporate discounts and will purchase in bulk.

That's funny as I asked Hp if I could configure the laptop and they flat out said no.

The company where I work (Animal Logic - Syndey) has a corporate deal with Hp so maybe something could be worked out.
If you think that's possible do you think you could PM me so we can discuss this?

    Regards,
    Simon

Hello simonpickard . I ordered today a pre-configured 8730w with the 2,8 and hp here in Greece the reseller told me that i can in the future upgrade to extreme or quad .I only need to order together the heat sink for the specific processor .The warranty is valid because the upgrade part will be ordered from Hp and so there is the same warranty .The motherboard is the same No problem .Only thing to buy eventualy is the power supply of 180w instead of 150w.

I'm sorry to say this but I think your reseller is wrong.
If you look in the service docs you'll see that there are 2 motherboards listed. One for Dual Cores and One for Quads. I'm 99% sure you'll have to replace your motherboard when you come to upgrade to a quad.

    Regards,
    Simon

maybe you are right. Ayway i could not afford now to pay so much for an extreme processor or quad .We will see in one year how the prices are and if it is convenient to replace or not processor + motherboard.
For now my target was to have the dreamcolor display and the fx 3700 gpu
but i will check again about the motherboard . Thank you and have a happy christmas

Yep that's a good point... The cost of a new motherboard + the Quad would still probably be less than getting it now! hehe.

I'm in the same boat as you by the way... I think I'm going to go with a low end dual for now as that's all I can afford and then upgrade later. It's just a shame that Hp has 2 different motherboards!

Merry Christmas to you also! Could you please be so kind as to report back here when you get your laptop? Would be great to hear what you think of it.

    Best regards,
    Simon

The only problem with upgrades is that HP does not alter the prices of its parts once they are set. As a result, you will be paying the same amount in a year's time for the CPU + heatsink if you purchase it from HP. Of course, you could by then try to get refurbished parts off eBay or something. Upgrading non-CRU notebook parts from name brand vendors is rarely worth it.

Humm. I wonder if the Quad motherboard supports Dual Cores?
If so, can you order the Quad motherboard when you buy it, even if you just get a dual cpu?

Looking at the parts page the Quad motherboard is $16 more than the Dual :(

    Simon
