I have been reading reviews of many notebook coolers and decided that zalman was the right one, but a friend owning it says its not designed to be used on lap, but is great of flat surfaces like desktop. Most coolers have vents on the bottom, which can't suck air when sitting on lap. Probably solution would be one which can suck air from the sides/back. So, Is there a laptop cooler that can be used on lap and would work well with HP notebooks??

Look at the cooler buyers guide. The only one that will work on your lap is the notepal infinite.

Usually it is noted coolers that are made from the lap suck air from anywhere from the bottom. Although fans do not touch your lap with some coolers that suck from the bottom lint and dust will collect more in the fans in use and puts wear on the cooler

This one really looks good. I googled for it, But seems like there arent many sites out there selling it. How big is it and with its design, is it comfortable enough to not cause any pain while on lap?? Also, I mostly would use my laptop on my bed, so if not lap, then bed usually blocks the laptop's vents. Does the design allow the cooler to intake air when its on something plush like bed??

u can check online for its real measurements. i use a xps m1530 on it and i have about an inch of extra cooler on either side of my laptop. i actually got mine off ebay BNIB for $70-80. if u look closely in the pictures u can fold the front part under. when i use the laptop on my lap, i fold the front part under. by doing so, it eliminates any discomfort cuz the foldable part, creates a "base" to sit on yur lap. its kinda hard to explain. u just have to check it out yurself. it also has rubber guards at the bottom where it stops the folding front part from blockin any of the fans.
it is a VERY well thought-out design that actually works. i have no complains about this cooler, whether it be used on top of a desk or my lap.

So like you said about design, this would be useful even if I lay my laptop on a bed or over couple of pillows (I do that to raise the laptop when computing on my bed). Usually pillows dont let the laptop breathe when I put it directly over them, and a notebook cooler hasnt been much help either since pillows/bed blocked cooler's fans also. Do you think using this one can help me??

yup u'll be fine. if u wanted a little more elevation, u can just fold the front under and it raises it a bit too.

most ppl wouldn't consider the cryo LX to be very comfortable from just lookin at online pix. u actually NEED to have some real everyday use with this beast. i highly recommend u try flippin the front under, when u'r usin it on yur lap or if u wanted a more elevated surface. this may not be a "compact" laptop cooler as far as its sheer size. but the versatility of this cooler just sealed the deal for me. and so far i've been seein better numbers with my cryo LX compared to other users with zalman units.
