    I own both
Basicly they are the same except the GPU. Although both GPUs are crippled due GDDR3 memory 5830 is faster (800 vs 640 shaders)
But if you are going to overclock the 5830M will be 20% faster, you can reach up to 1100Mhz memory clock and 600 core clock (which 4830M is stuck around 1000Mhz mem and 550 core and 160 shaders less)

So if you don't overclock you won't notice difference. If you do 5830M will be 20% faster.
PLUS dx11 support instead of 10.1

The quad-core Envy with the 5830 has USB 3.0, but i5 versions don't.

Not sure what would happen if you upgraded to a quad-core i7 though.

someone said that it not possible to upgrade from i5 to i7 due to the different socket.

    not sure if this true

That was me, it's not possible. Chipset would also block it

Although I think someone did downgrade from the 720 to an i7-620 (dual core) which worked, but they couldn't use the USB ports (the ones that could be 3.0)

thank you for all your clarification and help.

Now to go look for a decent envy to buy or

    I dont think so.

All of my question have been referring to the envy 15 only.

HP probably added in a USB 3 controller for the i7 models, as of that time there were no intel chipset USB controllers capable of USB 3 IIRC
