I have the dv5000 and something is bugging me.

Whenever I look at the screen dead-on, things seem fine, but as soon as I move my head any, certain parts of the screen appear dim (or dimmer than others). This is driving me nuts, because if someone sends me a photo, I have to move my head up and down to see it clearly (in other words, to distribute the light across the image).

For example, the blue horizontal bars at the top of this page right now appear darker and lighter as I move my head up and down.

Am I going nutz? Is there something wrong with my display or is this just a necessary evil with laptop LCDs?

    Thank you.

Thats called poor vertical viewing angles for you :)

I don't think theres anything you can do, bar buying a new laptop

If you want the best LCDs, Sony and Fujitsu are the way to go but they will cost you much more than a equivalent HP.

I'm debating now whether to keep it and get a 19" separate LCD or send it back and get a Sony.

In fact, HP's screens are not bad at all. I've seen Sony's that I would pass by just to get to my HP screen.
The problem, IMO, is in the expectations. Don't expect the viewing angle of a good TFT display on a laptop. I even prefer the restricted vieiwing angle, this is personal after all :)

Sony has the best lcd's in the world. Their technology is at least a decade ahead of other companies. Their Wega engine 50 or 60 inch Rear Projection TV's are the clearest on the planet. There lcd technology uses double the pixels of standard lcd's. Not sure about the noteboks screens but I would guess they are better than standard notebook screens.

I don't know about their rear projection TVs, but the panels for Sony's LCD TVs are made by Samsung in a joint venture between the two companies called S-LCD. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung also supplied LCDs for Sony notebooks too.

I vote for Fujitsu for the best screen. Sony does have great screens but so do the Thinkpads with matte finish (more business oriented).
HP's screens look great on 14 inch laptops and not so great on 15'' because of the lower resolution as compared to Sony or any of the other brands

Could there be something wrong with the invert not producing enough power to all the Lights in the LCD?
