No, thats not a good deal. I just went to www.hpshopping.com and customized that exact same Compaq laptop including a 64 MB Radeon 9200 (you didn't mention which came with the one you were inquiring about) and it came to $1,797 after only $100 of MIR. Direct from the source, the same laptop, less mail in rebates to mess with, and its a hundred dollars cheaper. Hence, the one you are looking at isn't a good deal.

    1. You certainly can copy with only one optical drive, as long as it is a burner of some fashion. You insert the original material into that drive, copy it onto the hard drive, replace the material with a blank cd/dvd and copy the material from the hard drive to the blank medium. Its easy once you get used to it.

I'm not sure who is telling you you NEED to buy extra equipment but they are wrong. Your laptop will also incorporate a 10/100 network card alongside your wireless card, meaning that you can simply wire your dsl modem directly to your laptop (but that would mean you will only have your laptop on the net). If you wish to share the signal with your desktop then you simply need to procure a router, it acts as a splitter. You would plug both computer into the router via Ethernet cabling.

If you wish to utilize your wireless capabilities then you would need special equipment, but it won't be expensive and you won't need much seeing as how you already have half of the equation integrated into your laptop. Rather than purchasing the wired router I mentioned previously you simply have to pick up a wireless router. You can still wire your desktop and have your laptop wireless. Think of the wirelss router just like a wired except it has antenae that transmit information to your wireless card in addition to its wired capabilities.

    Hope this helps.

Both brands are excellent. In fact, some of their models are actually outsourced to the SAME companies. Due to that fact, I would choose which ever company can give you the best overall price. That is *generally* HP/Compaq. As I perused Dell's website and looked at their 8600 series (comparable to what you are looking at) they seem to be considerably more expensive for basically the same computer.

If you get a laptop w/o Wi-Fi you can most definetely insert a wireless card into the PC expansion slot. They serve the same purpose and are for all intensive purposed the same thing. You can use it in hot spots the same as an integrated card.

    You are so smart

Which do you think is better a compaq/hp or a dell
Also what if I get a laptop w/out WIFI & buy a wireless card, Is that the same thing? Will I be able to use it @ “hotspots” with just the wireless card? (I ask cuz I can get the wireless card for free)

I got the Linksys router (wireless (g) & card to match

I like HP over Dell. As of late Dell has been havign some quality problems. If you are going to get a Dell make sure you get the 3 yr. warrenty. As for Compaq I would prefer HP over them as well. HP owns Compaq and has neglected them a bit. Of course I am a little bias since I am the HP moderator and I have a customized zd7000.

As for the WiFi goes Slat as lead you in the right direction. Which linksys router model are you getting? Most have 4 or 5 spots in the back to accomidate all you wired computers in addition to the wireless ones (i.e. laptop).
