I'm looking at the 8540W. At the HP site it says

"Windows XP Professional (available through downgrade rights from Genuine Windows® 7 Professional)"

    What does that mean?

I want Windows 7 Professional 64. Is it XP or is it Win7 Professional with XP, and if it is Win 7 Professional with XP is it 64 bit?

Comes with XP pre-installed but will come with Windows 7 media. Don't know if it's x64 or x86. Call HP to find out or instead of the preconfigured, configure unit to your specs.

I called HP. It is Win7 Pro 32 bit.

Is it okay to discuss prices in this forum?

Figures since it would be an upgrade from XP x86.

    It is.

I am looking at the 8540W, configured with an i7 620M 4GB of DDR3, 320GB, and Quadro 880M at a pretty good price of $1679 and I would go for it but it comes with XP/Win7 Pro 32bit. I want it with Win7 Pro 64bit but that is a special configuration that makes it come to about $1950 (after some 24% discount the HP sales guy says he is giving me). That's not as attractive of a price.

Is there any way to get this thing configured with Win7 Pro 64bit for about the same price?

I have never bought an HP before and I don't know how they market their stuff.

You can get the unit with XP/Win7 Pro 32bit. Download or borrow a win7 64Bit disc and use the product Key on the bottom of the unit to register and activate. Your key entitles you to 32 or 64Bit version of Windows 7 professional.
