I am having a problem with my external speakers on the dv6000z. The headphones work but when I remove them, the external speakers do not work.

HP tech told me to send in the laptop for repair but I was wondering if I can take out the hard drive and send in the laptop? Or would that void the warranty? Thanks in advance.

yep, that would prbably void the warrenty. besides, I don't think they really care what you have on there.

Taking the drive out before shipping it off to support is preferred and will not void your warranty. I have seen many occasions where tech support wiped the drive and the owner was screwed cause they had all their data on there. If you prefer to send it with the drive, at least make a backup of anything you can't afford to lose. HP shouldn't need your drive to fix your notebook. They got lots of their own. Good Luck.

Yeah, some people I know told me HP tech sometimes wipe out the hard drive. I do not want that so I'm thinking of just sending it in without the hard drive.

they will probably wipe it as the first thing they do as it removes the possibility of a user installed program causing the problem. Backup the drive and send it in.

By "external speakers" I'm guessing you are referring to the laptop speakers, and if you are and you are using XP then here is an updated driver that "Fixes issue where the notebook speakers do not work after headphones or earphones are used for a while and then unplugged."

jmhal, I tried the updated driver as soon as the speakers stopped working..but it did not work so I am forced to send in for repair.

Does the old driver need to be uninstalled or can I just install the new one?

And if I should uninstall the old one..how can that be done?
