So I had bought my dv5t with 2GB of Ram to save $150, and I was going to upgrade through newegg.

So far, everything is running pretty smooth. Everyday tasks like web browsing and stuff, and even games.

Am I going to get a nice noticeable performance boost from 2GB extra Ram?

Im trying to think if I want to order some Ram from newegg while I order my cooler.

    Thanks. :)

ram will not make your machine run faster...what it will do is make it access the harddrive less.

If you are not doing anything that results in harddrive thrashing, you will not see a performance boost by adding ram.

So games may load up faster?

What about boot up, game performance, loading times in general? Doubling the RAM won't have a major impact?

I always thought more RAM the better.

A little mistake, 32bit OS can recognized up to 3GB (in some case, 3.5GB, not sure about it) of RAM

Only if you are thrashing will the make any difference. The performance difference from 1gb vs 4gb is zero (timings, and other settings similar), the only time adding more RAM will increase performance is when you are physically using more memory then the physical ram you have.

It depends if you multitask a lot. If you use a lot of programs on a daily basis then you might benefit from a 3gig upgrade at most. 4 GIGs is too much. Believe me lol. I have a DV7 with 4 gigs and barely crank up memory usage to 2.7Gigs. 3GIGs would be sufficient, but 4Gigs will be optimal.

I do a lot of editing so I always have like 50 bajillion applications open.

AND yes having more memory than little memory will affect the performance of the computer.

I'm looking at using the 'unrecognised' 1GB RAM for the gfx card

3 Gigs would still be more than enough.

Add the ram. Trust me on this one. adding ram is one of the cheapest upgrades and can make the biggest difference. While doing general tasks there won't be a big difference but the first time you load a memory intensive application you'll be glad you added the extra ram.

I use my dv5z with 3GB of RAM to run Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver CS3 simultaneously, and it runs well. :D

You guys know about SUPERFETCH right?!

The more ram the BETTER with Vista! Upgrade! If your notebook can take 4gb, vista32 will recognize 3.25GB. Vista64 won't make the difference really, but having the extra .75GB for whenever x64 is a worthwhile upgrade will be nice :D

Superfetch is only the greatest addition since the automobile...DUH! j/k

It's an annoying resource hog. Disable it and take back possession of your memory.
