At the risk of sounding like a complete noob here goes... My dv5 was crashing for no reason usually after heavy use. After a lot of back and forth with customer service, in India, and not getting anywhere, I have figured it out. THE REMOTE CONTROL IN THE EXPRESS CARD SLOT WAS OVERHEATING!!! The @!$%&? remotes power button was activating and shutting off the laptop. This also explains why i couldn't immediately reboot. Please let me know if this solution helps anybody. I did a search for this here and in a number of other forums but have found nothing, so go easy on me if this is moronic. Also I haven't crashed once since removing the remote.

My remote isn't detected by the laptop when it is pointing out from the expansion slot. Even when the power button is pressed (remote pointing at laptop) it just puts the computer in standby.
