HP dv9040us. F16 BIOS, XP Professional Media Center, Core 2 duo T5500, 2G, twin 120G HDs,
Seemed to start playing DVDs jerky sometime after installing trial version of Nero, but may have been something else.
Have uninstalled all software added after the problem began.
Have downloaded all MS updates, HP updates, etc.
    Any clues, advice, etc?
It was fine until a few days ago...

You need to uninstall Second IDE Canal on the device manager.
you can find it on + ATA ATAPI IDE Controllers.

    Good luck.

I went there to do just that, but there is no second IDE channel.
    What now?
I've now Restored to an earlier date, and audio CDs play smoothly, finally, but commercial DVDs will not play at all, and a few home-made DVDs will play, but without sound.
    What now???
Thanks for any help you can offer.

It can also be the laptop overheating. I had this problem, the DVD would play good for like 10min then it will start pausing and jumping because of the heat. I had to clean out all the air vents so the air could cirrculate

Don't think it's overheating. Running BIOS F16 seems to keep all cool enough. And problem occurs even after starting cold.
Should I mess with registry or what? I've never done that, but if you all give me direction I could learn. Only other thing to do is contact HP...bad DVD drive?
    Thanks in advance for ideas...
