This seems to defy all logic. I just bought a Compaq V3000 and I love it - but the dvd playback is downright pathetic! Jerky as if it were on a 10 year old setup. There's no shortage of memory, no mammoth programs are running in the background, there's no way there could be any spyware or virus troubles at so early a point, yet the dvd playback is nothing short of geriatric. Does anyone know what the deal could be here? I'm not talking about dvd-r's either. I'm talking about mainstream , professional dvd releases.

    What program are you using?

Thats usually the main cause of any DVD playing problems.

Usually that's caused by the IDE interface slipping into PIO mode instead of DMA mode. Check that (Advanced Settings tab of the IDE interface properties in Device Manager). Uninstalling the interface and rebooting so Windows will redetect it will usually straighten things out.

I would suggest PowerDVD, an older version if you can find one.
WMP is also good but be sure to have the latest patches.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies! I'm using whatever dvd playing software the machine is defaulting to. Would using other software screw up the Quick Play options?

my dv5000 skipped on video (just split second) and audio too. I exchanged it for another and it was fine, until the cd drive started opening randomly. Exchanged it for another and the HD was DOA. It's pretty much an HP thing. I've learned to envy those that have HP's that work flawlessly.

Are you serious?! Other than their McCartheyesque inter-office workings, I've not read any serious criticisms of late when it comes to HP or Compaq's quality. I've read numerous stellar reviews of the v3000 and none mentioned DVD playback issues. This is not good news. I guess I should bring it back then?

That's up to you. If you don't mind dealing with support down the road, then keep it. I highly suggest you read this forum thoroughly, in particular with respect to keyboard and hard drive isssues.
