hi
i just picked up an HP zx 5070 from future shop. its got a mobile p4 2.8ghz cpu, 512 ram,64 meg ati9200, dvd burner etc... it was a store return and is missing box and manuals and recovery cd. I paid 1699 for the unit with the ac adapter. did i get a decent deal or am i a fool? anyone have any idea where i can pick up a recovery cd short of calling hp and paying 60$ for it? Ill write a review on it later on, its my first day with it now.

Bunsen,
Congratulations on your purchase, I see you've decided on the HP rather than the Toshiba from eBay. That's a pretty good deal, since Futureshop is selling the ZX5040 for $2099.99 Canadian. I'm assuming there's a complete manufacturers warranty on the unit. You many want to contact HP and get an extended warranty for an additional 2 years. It'll protect you against paying any unnecessary repairs. Regarding the recovery CD's, just call HP and tell them that the unit you got from Futureshop did not come with any restore CD's when you opened the box. Don't tell them it was a returned/opened unit. Say that it was the last one Futureshop had and you would like the manuals and restore CD's for the unit. HP should hopefully be understanding about it and send then to you for free (fingers crossed).

Sorry bud, a customized one on HP shopping woulda probably cost you about the same, or less depending on the screen and hard drive.
2.8 / xp home / 512 ram / 80 gig 5400rpm / 2x-DVD RW / 54bg wireless / 64mb 9200 / 12 cell battery = $1573 w/ standard $50 mail in rebate. -
I'd either try to return it, or try what venombite said. HP wont miss one little recovery cd.

yes i decided to avoid ebay according to your advice; i figure it was better safe than sorry. it comes with a full manufacturers warranty just like a new one (1 year i think). Hey postal if you can get a similar system for me cheaper thatd be great but i seriously doubt it
take a look from hp site

oh and by the way is there anything that can be done about this touchpad while im typing? it is soooooooo annoying!!!

Hey Postal,
Just to let you know if you weren't aware, Bunsen is located in Canada and we canucks can't get configured systems from HP like most other people around the world. We can only get pre-built models that HP has selected to have in Canada. Talk about a bummer. Oh, and the amount is in Canadian Dollars, just divide his amount by 1.3 and it will give you the approx US Dollar amount. []

I think there is a button above the touchpad that you can turn on/off to enable or disable it while you're typing.
I really wanna buy a zx5000... -
stupid me i just noticed it! i guess ive got a LOT to learn.

Bunsen,
Just as an FYI, if you tried tapping your touchpad and find out that tapping/double tapping doesn't work, you have to enable the feature in the Control Panel for your mouse. Some HP notebooks seem to have tapping disabled by default.

ty,
tapping was actually enabled, but on another note, this scroll pad thing along the edge of the finger pad doesnt really seem to want to scroll. anything i can do about that?
??? -
should scroll fine.. open up a webpage and give it a try.

Ah you crazy canucks.

on a sidenote, i read on another post that you can download patches for some games to run in 1280by 800 resolution. Is this true? Are widescreens really going to be the norm in the near future? I have aoe conquerors and its driving me crazy that i cant play it at the highest resolution (1280x1024) i can only run it on the medium resolution (1024x768). sucks...

If there are patches for games, they're usually released by the game developers. So you're gonna have to check each developers site to see if there's a patch available for your games.
