    I just picked up and configured an envy 17, 720 i7, 8gb Ram, 500gb 7,200rpm, 1920x1080 screen for $1280.

It's a refurb but nothing is wrong with it (other than lack of warranty). I recommend them to anyone looking, I live in Colorado and was browsing ebay and noticed they were in fort collins, went and picked it up tonight locally. No I don't work for them, but they were a pretty good company to work with, especially when buying refurb. They've got everything in stock.

I had to order the second drive cable but found one for $38, going to order the Active MiniDisplay port for the eyefinity 3 display.

Awesome laptop so far, popped in my SSD and it screams. Glad I sold my MBP for this, love the dual drive option and it can drive 3 displays.

So the only difference between refurb and a new one is a lack of warranty? But when you buy it, and there is something wrong with it can you return it though?

Yup. They were pretty cool there in the store. It's more like a small warehouse, just hundreds of sealed refurb units. I opened one, it had a blemish I didn't like, the guy said "grab another one". Pretty much no questions asked 7 day return policy. Really can't beat that for the price.

I wish you luck....but no warranty, is well, that is what's wrong with it mate. I mean, after your 7 days, then what? So on day 8 say the comp won't start, then what? Yeah, you're out of 1280 bucks. :( I do hope its not the case for you, but for peace of mind it won't hurt to buy a new one with 2 year warranty. Anyway, I do hope it works out of you.'

P.S. I just went to HP.com to configure your system and see how much a new one with your specs would cost.... $1699.99 that is a $419.99 difference then what you paid. The question remains if saving just over 400 is worth the non warranty status, when I new one gives you 2 years warranty, and its not refurbished. Personally, I would not buy a refurb of your specs unless I got it for a real steal...way under $1,000 ....I would pay maybe $400 tops for what you got, not a penny more. Yeah, I'm cheap but I would be scared with a refurb without warranty.Again, good luck.

    Killa Joe..

It has a 90 day warranty, what is the "retail" version, 1yr?

I've never had a laptop need repairs between 90 days and yr. if it works after 90, it almost always works for the next 3yrs (in nearly every case I've seen where they are taken care of).

I can still buy a warranty through HP, and probably for less still and more coverage.

Shall I go on? I'll keep the $419, it's no different than a retail model. Probably returned by someone with buyers remorse.

Thanks for the luck, but I don't think I'll need it. More like law of averages.

You sound like you are frugal, claiming you would only pay $400 tops, yet you act like saving $419 isn't worth it.Odd.

thanks for clearing it up. I thought above you said you only had 7 days to return and no warranty, now you say you have 90 days? Ok.

The Envy 17 has 2 years standard warranty, not bad. :p

    Sorry my bad.

The store has a 7 day policy, no questions asked sorta deal, or if you have an issue with one you can swap it out. Then it has an hp 90 day if you decide to keep it.

With my own experience with 7 laptops.. All have been working until I decided to garbage it. My ENVY had some issues with the whine, but thats no big deal. I would have bought myself a refurb if I had the choice myself.

    jlrosine,

I have also recently purchased a refurb from Colorado computers. It will take awhile for me to get though since it will be going to my mom's place in Cali and then she'll be sending it to me here on Guam. Pretty much the same specs as yours, although the ram is at 6 gb and the only drive is a 160 gb SSD. I figured I could always add more memory and a second hard drive later... but the damage was a little more than yours at $1380. Just wanted to bump this old thread to see how yours is faring for you now?

As for warranty - it can also be purchased from HP and the deal will still be much better than buying the laptop as new.

The $400 can be saved on possible future repairs if they occur.

No need for sarcasm. Warranty can be purchased if you believe you need that and you still save money by buying the refurb over new one.
