Okay so I just got my DV6255US today and I want to remove all the bloatware and optimize Vista. I was thinking, would it just be better to format the drive and use an "all-in-one" Vista installer (downloaded) with my Home Premium key and have a fresh install. Any input is appreciated.

I got a DV6233SE from bestbuy and used the supplied vista dvd + key from the oem sticker under the laptop to format and install from fresh. Works like a charm. As a precaution, always make a set of recovery dvd's and make a copy of the swsetup folder where you can find all your pre-installed drivers/trialware.

    Cheers

PS. I formatted and used the same partition, didn't remove the recovery one.

Dont remove the recovery partition unless you really need the extra space. You never know you may need it in the future.

Which DVD did you use? The Vista Anytime DVD upgrade? The OEM key does not work on that one unfortunately. Does'nt the 3 disk DVD set put everything back on including the bloatware? Thanks.

Yes, I booted from the "Windows Anytime Upgrade" dvd that came bundled with the laptop. My oem key from under the laptop worked ok. Indeed if you recover from the recovery discs, you get the factory shipping state including the bloatware.

Hey guys, if you have to activate it then the key on the bottom did not activate it. I tried the key on the bottom from the upgrade cd and it was invalid. My thought is that the upgrade disk needs a valid upgrade key, not the same key as the oem. If that was the case I could copy any key off the bottom of a laptop at the store and use it. My though is to use a key retriever program and get it off that way. If you have to activate it, then the key on the bottom is not valid. Thanks.

I have a factory installed vista HP and I am booting/idling with 360-380 memory usage. 1G Ram Aero enabled with many cosmetic tweaks. My desktop doesn't look like a video game anymore, but still looks flashy.

Depending on your style and performance needs, this will effect how much you can "optimize" it. If you want the full on "vista experience" make sure you have plenty(2G) of Ram. Thats the best way to optimize it. ;)

Is it possible to prioritize/dedicate memory for certain programs in vista?

I don't like the delay I get when opening certain programs. Once it initializes, it's fast, but on the initial click there is a hiccup. Could be the programs. Any suggestions?

    Has Anyone tried ready boost?

I can answer two of your questions.

The delay when opening programs is probably the animation. You can turn it off in "performance and information tools" > "adjust visual effects." I turned windows animations off 'cause I like the windows to snap open like in XP.

I tried ready boost on a SD card in the card reader in my laptop. It works with a card that is fast enough, like a sandisk ultra. I do not believe that it does anything for you unless your system memory is lower. I have 2G memory and I don't think it is using the SD. It never flashes. :(
