What resolution is the screen? What resolution is the display currently set at? What resolution do you want it to be set at?

If you bought a WXGA+ screen, that's too bad for you. You can't set the resolution higher. Just because the dv5t has an option for WSXGA doesn't mean your laptop can run either if you purchase the WXGA+. If you try to force a higher resolution, quality of the screen will drop a lot.

    its 1280x800, I want it at 1280x1024

Has nothing to do with the screen, I want to set it through windows to a higher resolution.

I want things smaller on the screen. You can project 1280x resolutions on a 480 screen bro, AKA an SDTV

Looks like you got the 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800) option. You can't have a higher resolution with that screen. If you want the resolution higher you needed to order the
    15.4" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)

If you think the resolution has nothing to do with the screen, you are misinformed. It has everything to do with the screen. How can you set your resolution higher than what your screen will support? Anyways, if you just got it, you can return it and order the WSXGA+ screen.

By the way, 1280x1024 isn't a widescreen resolution. Even if you were able to set this resolution, everything would look weird and out of proportion.

    Sorry to disappoint

No I don't know everything. I just want the icons smaller. This has nothing to do with the screen. It will just resize everything smaller.

    Learn to read please. SDTV.

Explain to me why I can easily show a 1080 resolution on a SDTV That only support 420?

The resolution is set by the operating system, not the monitor, screen or anything else

The native resolution of your screen is 1280x800... since LCDs are fixed pixel displays, you cannot set it beyond it's native resolution... only way you're gonna get your text and icons smaller is to set it in Windows... In Vista, just hold down CTRL and use your scroll wheel to set your icons larger or smaller on-the-fly...

Let's say you have a 1 pixel x 1 pixel display. You're saying that you can display a 1280x1024 image on it?

It doesn't matter if the screen is 1280x800 or 1x1, there just aren't enough pixels.

SDTV is an analog display... you can't actually use a 1080i or 1080p resolution on a SDTV... if you're referring to a 1080i/p source video/movie... sure it'll play on the SDTV... but you can't set a resolution higher on the set than what it's capable of...

We're all here to help you. I think some folks are upset at the way you are wording your posts. If english is not your first language, then please let us know, but again everyone here is interested in answering your particular question.

Someone already posted that if you want the icons to be smaller, hold down the control key and then scroll up and down the touchpad

Because in that case, whatever you're outputting is downscaled to that resolution. It is no longer outputting 1920x1080 pixels.

Resolution is both limited by the operating system, graphics card, and monitor. If you have a VGA monitor (640x480), the largest resolution you can display on the monitor without scrolling is 640x480. You have a 1280x800 monitor and you want to display 1280x1024 (which is at the wrong aspect ratio btw), you can NOT do that, since there's not enough room for the extra pixels.

    @Xythil:
First of all, please be respectful of the people on this forum. They are helping you for free, so don't insult them.

Now, what you need to understand is that there is a difference between a projector that simply downscales the image and a monitor. Doing the same for your monitor would make it impossible to use, as there are many programs that are resolution-dependent. This would result in them looking like crap (i.e. text would be unreadable), so it's not supported. Video, on the other hand, is not as resolution dependent, particularly when downscaling, so you don't notice a difference.

It is not my first langauge sorry.

Maybe I don't get how resolution works.

Basically I just want to resize my Icons and stuff. In games I see everything fine, the resolution is perfect, but on the desktop windows are too big and I want to be able to view more.

Like I mentioned earlier you need to get the WSXGA+ display. You cannot make the windows smaller on your current laptop screen. Call HP and return the one that you have and order one with the higher resolution screen. They will pay for return shipping. The only thing that will hamper you is if you used a coupon that is expired. I've been told they will not honor a coupon again once it's been used.

Well, it sounds like you got a good deal. However, you customized it with a 1280 x 800 screen, when what you really wanted was a 1680 x 1050 screen.

    **** happens. =/
