Earlier today I ordered an nc8430 with these specs:

    T2600 (2.16 GHz)
    2 GB 667 ram
    100 GB 7200rpm hardrive
    radeon x1600 video
    dvd/rw drive
    wsxga+ 15.4" screen
    8 cell/68 watt-hr battery

Perhaps I will review it once I get it, I noticed the sticky at the top of the page here. In any case I'm pretty stoked about it... I did a lot of research and I think the nc8430 is probably the best 15.4" in the market in terms of overall features. The above specs are pretty much maxed out, though if you really want you can get more RAM... and before taxes it was $2,500. Not a bad deal at all.

The runner-up for my purchase was the Asus V6J, a good looking machine but it had some minor flaws that I figured would annoy me over time. I looked at the Dell D820, the Sony FJ, and briefly at the comparable Acer and Lenovo. I needed a sort of desktop replacement/portability combo, because I'll be taking the computer to class and the library for grad school, but it will also be my primary computer when I'm at my apartment.

I'm sure you will be happy with your purchase. I don't want to bring bad thoughts...but did you check out the ASUS S96J/Z96J and Compal HEL80 before buying? $2500 seems like a lot for a 15.4". Not trying to put HP down in anyway...the Nc8430 is a great machine... :)

Yeah I looked at those models briefly. Keep in mind, a lot of the price on the HP was hardware upgrades. With a T2400, 1 GB ram, the price was more like $1,850.

You can get the T2500, 1gb ram config for about 1,650 at some places. The features and build quality on this HP is head over heals better then the HEL80 and S96J.
