I am presently making a set of recovery disc's.
Can you guide me to how wipe the drive clean ( other identical laptop bought 2 of the same ) on the other laptop and then install the recovery disc's on that laptop.
    Thanks

I'm not too sure you can use the Recovery Disks of one laptop for a different laptop. As far as I know, Recovery Disks are bound to the serial number of the laptop (or something like that).

As for wiping the drive clean, you could reformat your hard drives. I reformatted with a Vista OEM disk, not sure if you can do that with Recovery Disks.

Even if there 2 identical laptops ? So serial numbers may make a differance . hmmm
One is finicky the other is just fine.
The one that is fine has been running for a few days and my daughter has put her own touches to it like myspace , firefox and so on.
Now I'm just doing the recovery now on the good computer, it should not cause problems if she has her own stuff on her laptop, the good laptop ?

Using the Recovery Disks you made should automatically wipe the drive and reinstall the original software.

I think you will be fine using the Recovery Disks made from the second machine, since they are identical units. Remember HP sells Recovery Disks to be used on any notebook for a given product. S/N makes no difference.

Also, only the software that HP provides will be restored when using the Recovery Disks. The laptop HD after the recovery should look just like it did when you first started your notebook after removing it from the package. i.e. Your restored notebook will not have any of your daughters modifications or data from the first notebook.

Please keep us informed of your progress and success.

From HP's user guides that you can read on your first computer:

    1. Insert the first recovery disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions.

You shouldn't have any problems, post if something comes up.

Well I did one re install but it returned the computer to its last state 09-06-08.
It also only used one disc.
So I started over again and when it asked to something can't remember, I went to advance options or something like that and its basically is reformatting now and once finished looks like it will go onto reinstalling original content.
    I'll let ya know. :)

That is the option you want, it will take all three disks.

I am going to go have a Latte now, will check back later to see your progress.

Ok so everything installed. All back to normal as it was when I opened the box.
Now went through some updates and norton and so on. All of a sudden crash dump. What the hell.
So it restarted itself and asked if I wanted to start back in safe mode or reg mode. i chose reg.
Then it went to a system 32 winsat or something like that.
Im going to update again and freggin norton and see what happens.
**** how can one laptop be perfect and one so ****ty.

At the point you are now with the software reinstalled and still having problems, you have a hardware problem of some sort.

You could run diagnostics on your HDD and check for bad sectors but I wouldn't. Since the notebook is new and apparently purchased local to you it is time to return your notebook and get another. If it is a reputable store there should be few questions asked.

    Sears.
They price matched it so I dealt with the manager and he ordered it on line while I was there at the store.
