I am very much aware that their is a function button for the backlight. But is there a way the backlight to automatically come on when it is restarted from shutdown. The backlight used to automatically come on when it was restarted, but it no longer does that anymore.

from when the computer is turned off? no.

its never done that on mine (though I have an envy 14 1xxx series so before the sandy bridge refresh).

now it'll stay on if you reboot on mine but that's about it.

I have the same problem. Well not a problem because that's how HP wants it to be but the keyboard does not stay lit after a shutdown (only stays lit through restart and sleep/wake). It sucks because I have the beats and the red keys on black is not the best unless there is bright daylight but I almost always (95%) need to have backlight on and the laptop does not do that. What sucks more is you have to wait till windows logo shows up then wait another couple seconds till you can turn it on (no immediate control on boot). Oh well, I can live with it, I am complaining about pushing a button after all..
