This is my first foray into repairing my laptop. The initial symptom was severe overheating resulting in abrupt shut down. I read up a bit and guessed that the cooling fan might need to be replaced. Before ordering one I located instructions on how to proceed and disassembled everything down to the fan, saw that it was bound up removed it lubricated it reassembled the HP DV1000 and was happy to find that the laptop continued to operate although the fan did not.

I repeated the procedure the next day and left the fan with lubrication for a longer time, removed excess lubricant reassembled computer with the same results.

Disassembled it again and took fan to local computer guy to see if he had a replacement, he didn't, I ordered one and reassembled the computer. I placed a fan under the computer and used it for several days while I awaited the fan to arrive.

The fan arrived, I installed it, reassembled everything powered it up and was happy to see that the fan was now doing its job.

One minor problem the keyboard is "dead". I've reseated the ribbon cable under the ZIF connector and powered up. Done this 5 or 6 times with same result. I can navigate using the wireless USB mouse and trackpad but the keyboard is not responsive at all.

The main battery was out for a considerable amount of time - could it be something as simple as a software issue? Any ideas how to proceed short of ordering a new keyboard?

This is my first PC, all my other computers are Macs so I don't have access to any external keyboards which I could use to troubleshoot.

Is it possible that I did some damage to the portion of the motherboard which has the ZIF connector that is so localized that it hasn't affected the rest of the functioning?

    Thank-you for any help.
