I'm having an annoying issue with my NC8430 where the keys are seemingly "squeaking" while typing on them. It's a very light sound, almost as if the keys aren't cut correctly and rubbing against the plastic base used to hold them together. I've taken the keyboard out and looked at it, but I don't know that there's anything I specifically can do to it. I also don't know whether this is normal for a new keyboard, but I've certainly never experienced this before on a laptop; to be fair, I've also never used an HP laptop before.

It seems like a few random keys are worse than others, including "e", the left shift, spacebar, backspace, and a few others. It seems that a majority of the keys do produce a squeak at random, but these the specific keys I mentioned are the easiest to replicate the squeak on.

Is my only option to call HP and send in my notebook for a replacement, or could I get them to send me a replacement to install myself? I ordered the laptop on 9-18 and didn't actually receive it until 10-24, so I'd rather not be without it for any longer as it is definitely hampering my coursework and my grades are starting to reflect that.

I just got my nc8430 earlier in the week and the keys feel great. Definitely no squeaking.

If you can get HP to do it, I'm sure it would be pretty easy to replace your keyboard for another one without having to send it in. Removing the keyboard from the nc8430 is laughably easy.

Call into HP and get them to send you a new keyboard. You can do the work without any problems, and there is plenty of documentation on that notebook.

Probably was a manufacturing problem when the keyboard was made...I don't think human beings are at the far end of the QA line to type an essay on these notebooks. Too bad... :D
