    Fedex is picking up my L2000 tomorrow. My next purchase is gonna be a ChemBook 2030. It has very similar features to the L2000 including a nice 14' wxga screen and is thin/light. It uses a pentium M, has a discrete graphics card, and even has a built in webcam - all for a nice price.

    Well, im officially dumping my L2000. My inspiron 6000 just came in and its easily a better system for me. Yes, its a horse weighing 6.5lbs and having a 15.4" screen, but it fits my needs and im happy.

    I did realize though why it is i started hating the l2000. its not the fan really. its more the heat that is frustrating. i dont mean to offend anyone but the idea of a fan that is constantly going on and off, yet the computer is still maintaining an uncomfortable amount of heat only makes me feel the thing isnt built right. the system i just got has a fan thats always on but its barely noticeable and the system runs very cool.

    At least on my L2000, the fan turning on-off frequently issue is resolved once I updated the AMD cpu driver to version 1.2.2. Running the AMD CPU Setup one time only removes the AMD driver and Microsoft puts the Microsoft CPU driver by default. That makes the fan issue worse. However running it the second time installs it correctly and takes care of the fan issue.

    Use Device Manager to make sure that you have the AMD driver by checking under Driver tab on the properties page of AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology Processor.

    The hot Samsung Hard drive issue is still there. I'm waiting to see if its resolved for other people by changing hard drives.

    Oh geeze, you mean HP isn't setting up Cool 'n Quiet power management correctly? If the CPU is always running at full speed, and you've got a hot Samsung HD, that would explain a lot.

    No, HP does have it set up correctly, but they're using an older version of it. I downloaded 1.2.2 and ran it twice (once to remove the old version and once to install the new version), and it didn't seem to do anything for me. Hopefully my chembook will come soon and i'll see how it compares. I think a lot of people who ordered the L2000 and are having issues should take a look at it.

    Let us know how Chembook compares. You will get a truly powerful GPU with that one, unlike in the L2000s, whose GPU is outdated by no less than 3 years.

    ive done the driver updates for the AMD and still the same results. The thing kept on "breathing". i know alot of people love this thing but i dont think i could recommend it to anyone. centrino seems to be the way to go still even if it does cost a tad more and isnt 64bit.

    If you're seeing the on/off behavior I would definitely send it back. That's not acceptable and not all of the units are doing this. I suspect their may have been a defect in these units.

    well, I didn't know who to think about this little lappy after reading all these complaints, so I went to Comp USA to go and see it for myself. Yes, the left side of the computer is a bit warm, but I don't think enough to bother me. If anything, my hands are always freezing, so it'l be more comfortable. As for the fan. I dunno, I know the store is kinda loud and all, but I had to put my ear right up to it and listen very closely to even hear it. Not that I'm ever on the computer in complete silence anyway. Both my old laptop and this desktop are way noisey and it doesn't bother me.
    So I ordered one from amazon.com when I got home. Plus Sliders season 3 :)

    I received my L2000 last night and spent about 4 hours playing with it. This included installing software, configuration, and some project compilations. The system is configured as follows:

    HP Special Edition L2000 Notebook PC

    * – Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional with SP2
    * – AMD Turion(TM) 64 ML-34 (1.8GHz/1MB L2 Cache)
    * – 14.0 WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768)
    * – ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports
    * – 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
    * – 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    * – LightScribe 8x DVD+/-RW&CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer
    * – 54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
    * – 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

    I worked with the notebook on a table for about 3 hours, and with it on my lap for about an hour. As far as heat goes, the left side of the unit that rests under my palm did get slightly warm but nothing that could be considered close to uncomfortable. When working with the system on my lap, I did feel a fair amount of heat being vented on the bottom left side beside the battery (rear of unit near the LCD attachment). Perhaps the fact that the 12 cell battery raises the back of the laptop off a flat surface allows for better circulation.

    I was not really trying to pay attention to the fan, and therefore I can honestly say that I never once noticed the fan go on or turn off. Most of the time I was working with the laptop, I was working at my desk in my office alone with no music playing. This seems to counterdict what many are saying and I have no explanation. Perhaps my fan is broke? /jk

    Anyhow, I just wanted to add my initial 2 bits in here regarding the L2000.

    I bought this at Costco a few days ago and the fan has been driving me crazy. It starts as soon as I turn on the power and it never lets up; On, off, just like everyone says. The only thing I've been doing is surfing the internet so I tried propping it up on a small book and uninstalling and reinstalling the processor driver. So far none of these have helped, which is unfortunate because it really is a great deal for $999. The heat is also bothersome but not so much as the fan.

    I'm going to order my custom dv1000 and return this to Costco.

    Which HD does your L2000 have? I bet it's a Samsung.

    Maybe you just need a red stapler :D.

    Is there any settings that you can change to alter the temperature that the fan starts at? If you could just bump it up a few degrees (I don't think that would damage the hardware much), it might help. Just a suggestion.

    I don't know what brand the hard drive is. I've looked at the product specs at hp.com, my computer, the box the computer came in, no luck. It's an L2005CL. The red stapler would definitely make me feel a little better. :)

    I don't think there is an option for changing the temp at which the fan turns on. Then again, this is my first notebook so there is still much to learn.

    Has anybody had any success after speaking to tech support?

    Go into Device Manager | Disk Drives and your HD will be listed. In my case the Hitachi model name is listed. A Google search on the string will tell you who made it if it isn't clear.

    AFAIK there's no way to change the fan behavior.

    Someone in another thread mentioned that his L2000 had no feet, blocking the air intake when sat flat on a desk.

    Thanks, Brian. The HD is a Seagate Momentus. My notebook also has feet, yet it insists on breathing loudly. What does it want from me? :mad:

    Your Seagate HD is quite economical and should not heat to over 36-38 oC. It is the CPU that warms your system up. Now, if you install Samsung HD, your fan may become always ON, if you prefer that. For always OFF solution, get a different (Centrino) notebook.

    Get MobileMeter and tell us what your CPU and HD temps are. The fan should be turning on when the CPU hits 55C and shutting down at 50C. So long as there's nothing blocking the bottom air intake (the rubber feet should lift the notebook off your desk by a few mm) the fan should be off most of the time. With power management enabled these CPUs just don't use that much power. The Pentium M has the advantage under sustained CPU load but in normal use (web browsing, etc) it has no real advantage.

    I'm about to return L2000 after one last experiment:

    Switch toshiba HD with seagate. If there is still heat/fan issue
    with Seagate, it's going back.

    AMD needs some more work cut out for them.
    Hope they release the MT (25W) version of Turion sooner
    than later.
