Download the program. Install. Set to "automatic" in both battery and AC. No more fan cycling. In fact, no more fan. Temps under 50 degrees. Cooler computer. Lower temps. Three days since install, still no fan. Mine is set at 4x and min voltage is 1.0. Tried lower voltage, but system was unstable. Not sure what it all means, but it sure is quieter and cooler! Probably not at full speed, OK with me though. I'll post more of my settings once I'm on the notebook (desktop right now). Thanks to "blksnake". By the way, I have the 1.6 GHz

You can set your own CPU speed/voltage, that will automatically be adjusted by the prog in realtime. Done in "Management", "add state".
My Athlon 3700+ had 0.95V@800MHz
[email protected].
Now the settings are
0.8V@800MHz
[email protected].
Runs perfectly stable.
For stability it is best to tweak only the lowest and the highest voltages, and to leave all the intermediate steps at their default voltage settings.

You can create multiple P-State Transitions (PST) with the RightMark CPU Clock Utility. Multiple PST allows the processor to work at a lower multiplier (FID) and undervolt setting (VID).
I created a total of four PST for my undervolted 1.8GHz AMD Turion64 notebook. I found the lowest voltage (VID) the processor would operate at a particular multiplier (FID) and created PST for each setting. The stock settings only have two PST. Creating additional PST allows my processor to work more efficiently and thus cooler.
My settings may not work reliably for your processor. -

I've tried your suggestion.
Under "Management", AC and battery to
"Automatic Management" and Performance/Power
preference to "Balanced" (that's the default).
Fan still kicks on. That's with elevated 12 cell battery.
I'm going to get seagate hd tomorrow. If it still makes the
notebook warm, it's going back to HP.

That's the default multiplier and voltage. Corresponds to 800MHz
(4 x 200Mhz Sbus) and 1.0v.

i have tried this utility and still using right now ...
there are some improvements in temp.
my only problem is if my system is undervolted, my RAM never goes to 333mhz (160+x2) regardless if my power scheme is set to minimal or maximal.
it just stays at 266Mhz(133 x2) even at full load
