The L2000 from Sam's Club says it has a "Recovery DVD." Can I use that to completely reinstall Windows, or is it for pure recovery uses only? If it is just an OEM-version, does it imply that it's the Windows (Home) installation and drivers all-in-one?

It will restore your machine to the state in which it came when you got it. So if you sell it or it gets really messed up, you'd use it.

Do I have a choice in selecting whether or not to install the prebundled software?

Yes, you'll be able to select to install the pre-installed software...most Hp/Compaq's have 2 discs - 1 with clean Win XP and the second containing the drivers & the other software...

No. Its 2 disks. 1 XP Home cd. and 1 drivers/software disk. You install the OS like normal then pick which apps/drivers you want from disk 2.

I got a Dell 6000 and immediately formatted to get rid of the junk and to my surprise the only disk this computer came with was an AOL cd. Apparently Dell's new thing is to include a hidden "Create OS Restore Disk" program that makes the end user create their own restore disk with an image on the drive. Since i formatted it then i screwed myself up, but luckily the L2000 disk is an actual WinXP retail disk so it worked fine. But it looks like restore disks are on their way out. Ugh.
