    Hi Folks,
My R4000 CTO has racing stripes covering the right third of the screen. I used to remedy this by hitting it like we used to do to our olde Zenith TV. (yes, I'm olde)
I've found a replacement LCD on Ebay, but I wanted to run the idea past the techy's here before I commit to a $200 purchase.

Is it really the LCD or could it possibly be another piece of hardware causing this?

    thx

It could be the video card. Hook up an external screen; if the lines don't appear, it's probably your LCD.

First try an external monitor like thegsrguy suggested. If it's not the video card, try taking the laptop apart and examining the wires (should be a shielded bundle) that go from your LCD. You may have to peel back the wire shielding (looks like fabric electrical tape) to make sure there aren't any damaged wires or lose connections.

If you are very daring, you can do this with the system turned on, and gently wiggle that cable to find the source of the problem.

Generally, you just have to take off the top chassis bezel (and possibly the underlying media button controller board), and maybe the LCD frame (depending on the model) to get full access to this cable.

    thx guys,
The stripes didn't show on remote monitor and there is no change while toying with the wire loom. I didn't think that wiggling the wires would work. The unit started doing this after bouncing around in my "bobtail tractor"... (while protected in padded case and briefcase)

    1) Do you think it is worth a new LCD?
    2) Is the "brightview" screen worth the upgrade?

    thx

hmmm well $200 aint bad for a new LCD but i think u cud get a full laptop with budget specs and probably refurbished or almost new for $500. Think about it though, if u wanted to sell it how much would you get for it now and/or fully working. if u can make good money on it fixed up then it cud be worth it but if u arent gonna make much then maybe u shud salvage the parts and get yourself a newer model.
