Hey guys, I seem to be having an issue with my laptop and it's the fans not going high or fast. I don't know when this started happening but the odd thing is that the fans are not broken because when I boot it up I can hear and feel the fans going fast but as soon as the screen gets to the Windows Loading Screen the fans go back down to normal or slow speed, which is normal but when I'm playing my games I expect it to speed up so it can cool down my laptop, nope instead at 97 Celsius it's still the same speed and doesn't even bother trying lol. This is getting quite annoying because I need a fan sitting on the ground pointing up at my laptop just to keep it cool so it doesn't just turn off on me now I'm debating weather I should take it to my local Future Shop seeing as how I still have it under there 2 year warranty but I kind of look at that option as my last resort till I can be sure I can't fix it.
If any of this information helps heres what I'm running:
HP G60-104CA Laptop
2 GB of RAM
1.90 GHz AMD Athlon X2 64 Dual Core Processor
256 MB of Video RAM (Taken from the 2GB of ram)
Running Windows 7
BIOS Password on Start Set to ON.
Startup Windows Password is ON

Heat is the number one killer of any computer. So making sure your laptop stays cool is something everyone should think about. In that case, having an external fan blowing on your computer is actually a very good idea; and one that I also do just as an additional precaution. However, this becomes less of an issue if you're in an air conditioned room.
-
Try updating BIOS if it's not the latest version. Those temps are really bad, if a BIOS update does not fix them take the laptop back for a replacement.
-
I think the BIOS Is the latest one. I'll check my Manufacturer's site for another update? Or do you have a better place for me to check for the updates.
-
BIOS updates always come from the manufacturer. If you have the latest version go get it replaced.
-
Gah, I don't think I can leave my laptop for them, they might start blaming it on the fact of me having Windows 7 and then put ty vista on it again >_<! So you're saying there's nothing I can do?
-
It's the best way to get it fixed. Just keep sending it back until they fix it or replace it if it's still under warranty. Worth re-installing Windows 7 later on when your notebook either gets fixed or replaced.
Just make sure you backup your data and maybe re-install Vista. You don't even have to install the drivers. Just a clean install of Vista, that's what I used to do when I had to send my old HP for repair. -
Uh, should I just download a copy of vista somewhere because I have so much hatred towards vista I didn't want anything to do with it, so I've deleted the partition that HP Puts on your computer which takes up like 10GB a while ago.
PS: I'm also on Linux(Xubuntu/Windows 7 dualboot.) at the moment and I guess it wasn't a OS Problem the fans won't go high on here either. -
Okay, so I kind of found a fix for this but it really is a head scratcher, if I shutdown my computer and open it back up the fans will stay at a low speed setting regardless of temperatures and usage, BUT if I put my computer in sleep mode and wake it back up it will be normal, meaning the fans go fast when required with high temps... Does anyone want to elaborate this for me or is everyone as stumped as I am on this situation.
-
Congratulations, you have just found a BIOS bug.
-
Here's a completely different way of looking at the overheating/fan continuously on problem, that shouldn't be overlooked: dust in the vents. My dv5t has this problem occasionally, and when I turn it over and gently vacuum or blow out the dust, the problem is resoved for several weeks, or so, at which point the dust must accumulate again so I repeat it -- always stops the continuous fan because apparently, the dust trapped in the vents is causing the overheating.
-
Dust has nothing to do with this issue lol, I'm telling you that the way I solved this issue and still am is putting the laptop to sleep and waking it up then the fans act "Normal", If I were to just restart the fans would just stay at a constant speed of LOW. Even when the laptop was at 105C or if it was 50C The speed wouldn't changed till I would make it sleep and wake it up, also when do you think they will set out a BIOS update for this mentally challenged bug.....
-
If you bug them enough they will release an update. But you should REALLY bug them a lot.
-
Lol, Do you think I'm the only one with this issue, do you think I'd be able to solve it myself?
OffTopic lol your DV5 is Exactly Like my G60-104CA cept, I don't got BT, do you by any chance have StereoMix/LineIn/What U hear? -
As far as i remember there is no Stereo Mix here either. I have used only my DV9700 lately, but i'll check again to be sure.
However they do have dual headphone jacks, you could simply use a loopback cable, as the microphone in also works as a line in (accepts a high level signal, and it's stereo). -
O_O So what wire would I need? (I.e. Male to male aux?)
-
WOW, Eman...I joined this site just to say THANK YOU!
I was searcing yet again for keywords 'cq60-417ca overheating' after my laptop dropped dead again from overheating and this forum has been indexed since my last search...
I KNEW there was a bug in the cq60-417ca --- a LOT of others have reported the same overheating problem, but compaq says 'clean the vents', whatever...
the thing must have dropped dead 100 times on me because of the heat and the fans not stepping up except during the bios screen / early boot...
had to prop it on top of somthing along the edges just for normal operations....and ripping? forget it...games? same...was good for just about nothing cept browsing and email...at least with the sleep/wake trick i can use it now for anything.
THANK YOU!
still no updated bios either...you have any luck with compaq support?
it IS bios...win vista and win7 have SAME problem (and solution)... -
Are you using the performance power plan?
Did you try downloading AMD driver from amd.com? it regulates the heat.
