I own a HP Pavilion ze4145 which has worked great until this morning. I powered it up and just before the password screen is supposed to show, the screen flickers and goes dark. I can tell its at the password screen but I can't see anything. I tried to brighten it but to no avail. Any help out there???? Is it the video card or something specifically with the monitor?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the backlight died. When you restart, is it still dim during the POST or when you go into BIOS?

I can see the start up screen until it switches to the password screen then it goes black. I guess that would be during POST. I can get into the setup, diagnostics, and even safe mode (which wont load) screen and see the screen but when I try to log on its only a black screen.................
If it is the back light then does that mean I have to replace the monitor or???

If it is the backlight then you can still see very dim text on the screen. The best way to check if the graphics card is OK is to plug in an external display (then reboot). Most likely it is the inverter for the backlight.

No dim text. If I close the lid then re-open the brightens a little but still no text.

No dim Text. If I close the lid then re-open it, the screen brightens a little but still no text what so ever.
