Hi I'm using a dv9000 and for some reason no matter how hot my laptop gets the fan always spins at the same slow speed. Thus causing it to overheat and turn off frequently. Also my second hard drive isn't showing up, it hasn't shown up since I got it back from customer service. But I'm more concerned about the fan, should I read the take apart guide and attempt to fix it, or should I bite the bullet and send it to customer service? Any other suggestions?

    Two things:

    1) Did you check to see if there is a BIOS update for your model which addressed the fan control algorithm?

    2) It could be a faulty fan or the fan is somewhat stuck with dust. Get it fixed under warranty if you could. You could also try blowing the dust off the fan with a can of compressed air to see it helps.

There might be something in the BIOS about fan speed. It's worth checking...

yeah I 2nd the possibility of a BIOS update...also if it is a dust problem, have a look at the cooling guide! :)

I think you should show up at HP headquarters and throw it at the CEO's head. That should cool it off.

I would also check the for a BIOS update before you send it back. If there is one, install it to see if it works. If it doesn't work and you still have a warranty I would send it back for repair.

As for the HDD, check inside the BIOS to see if the HDD is recognized. Also, I would check to see if the HDD is even spinning. Take off the HDD cover and listen for any noises coming from the HDD. It could be 1 of 3 things, the HDD went bad, the SATA port on the motherboard went bad, or the OS isn't recognizing the HDD for some reason. Also, have you checked inside of Disk Management? Left click on My Computer-->Manage-->Disk Management. Inside there it will show you the physical disks connected to the computer (HDDs) and the partitions located on each physical disk. It might be that the disk's partition was corrupted and you can't see it in my computer because you need to reformat.

Let us know what happens after you try all the steps suggested so far.

Well I flashed the bios and updated the video card driver and that didn't work so now I'm going to take it apart and clean it. Wish me luck...
