Yesterday it sems I've started having issues with my HP nc8430, seems like theres a malfunction with the button that the lid presses when it closes (anyone know the technical term for this) and therefore my screen sometimes goes from dark to normal - although in the last few hours its been continually staying black which means the laptop is un-useable. Has anyone had a similar issue?

Sticking lid switches have been a big problem with the dv2000 series. FunnyX wrote up a great tutorial for that model: dv2000 lid switch fix. The switch is under the right hinge in the dv2000, not sure where it is on yours, but the fix is to find where the switch cable plugs into the motherboard and unplug it.

This assumes that your problem isn't from the LCD inverter or backlight failing. The switch is the first thing I'd check.

Just to make sure it's the lid switch and not something else (like your video card), have you tried using an external monitor and making sure that worked?

Also, have you tried fiddling with the switch itself? It's the little thingy (sorry, don't know how else to describe it) right in front of the left hinge.

Tried the external monitor and it seems that the issue is with my screen - not sure whether to purchase a replacement monitor and install it myself or...

When the screen goes dark, can you still see the image on the screen? If so the problem is the inverter or backlight.

Yeah you can still see the image on the screen very faintly - is there a way to manually fix the inverter or backlight without sending it away?

Yes. Replacing the inverter is straightforward. You'll need to take apart the screen, see which inverter you have (small board at the base of the screen), plug its part number into eBay, buy one and swap it in. You really need to check the lid switch first though and I don't know where it plugs into on your notebook.

There's also a very slight possibility that one of the two wires connected to your LCD backlight has broken off. That happened to me once in a Dell. That would be the last thing I'd try, and I'd replace the backlight while I was at it just in case it's a dead backlight too (usually the backlight doesn't outright die but turn pinkish though).

I have a dv6500t cto with the same issue. Would the diagnostic and repair procedures be the same as the dv2000 series?
