I just encountered a really weird issue with my HP business laptop. I haven't turned it on in the last 2 days. It's just on my bed sitting there when I noticed the clothes hanging around it were warming up. I then touched the laptop and found it incredibly hot... and couldn't touch it for more than a second.

As a precautionary, I pulled the battery out. Laptop seems to be cooling down right now. What the heck could be going on? Laptop has been OFF for 2 days and isn't hooked up to AC power either. Something tells me the battery suddenly is defective or shorting out? I am hesitant to turn on the PC right now.

It sounds like it got hot from lack of airflow from the bed/cloths, but why did you leave it off for two days? Does the battery not work?

It's possible that the battery is defective, but you would need to get in contact with the manufacturer and see if they will take a look at it. And as with most troubleshooting, it would likely be worth it to test it again. It would, after all, be a big time waster if that actually wasn't the problem.

Good luck mate, let us know how things go!

When did you buy the notebook? I think HP only has a one year warranty on all of their batteries. Are you sure it didn't wake up then run until the battery died? I've put my 8530w in my backpack while it's off and when I take it out it's on and hot. It pulls that trick fairly often. Lack of airflow while on would explain the temperature as well.

I mean the computer was just not in use and turned off. I am using my personal laptop at home, but brought this business HP laptop back home just in case I needed to do work.

Yeah, I am going to send it back to IT and have them replace it.

Notebook is provided by the company, probably about 1-2 years old.

I`m guessing, as someone else, that you thought it was off, but that it actually wasn't and simply overheated from lack of airflow.

If it doesn`t work - possible short. If it works maybe it`s wasn`t fully turned off and was overheating due to airflow as others have suggested.

I`d suggest to have your IT look at it as you said.

    Take care,
    Shannon
