    Hi all :)

Earlier tonight my laptop's touch pad (a compaq) suddenly stopped working. It is completely unresponsive. (not just frozen- keys respond fine) The laptop is a few years old so it is probably just wear and tear...just asking incase there might be other known reasons for it.

And I'm hoping there might be some alternative solutions other than replacing the entire touch pad?

Though lol I realise I probably will have to replace it. So does anyone know how easy it is to do so? and how expensive?

    Thanks!

(I had a quick browse over the first few pages, but couldn't see any threads with this topic. If there has been the same topic recently sorry!)

    hi,

is the laptop still or eligible for a warranty claim?
there is no such things as wear and tear if it is just a "few days old" under the most heavy usage, a laptop touch pad should last more than a year. unless you have long fingernails and continualy scratching them ;)
in any case if it is still under warranty you should be able to replace it,

especially if it is just a few days old.
replacing a touchpad is rather a minor task, could be replacement of the entire top section (keboard, top casing, touchpad, because they are one unit, like my macbook) or just a simple replacement of the touchpad. whatever the case, i think it is best to leave it to an authorised repairer, especially if you don't know what you're doing.

Does it have an on off switch or FN combination? (Like the HP pavillions and alienware systems.)

I don't think it would be under warranty Wobble. I said it is a 'few years' old, not days. & Thanks for the info on replacing it. I probably will end up paying someone to do it.

lol. Wouldn't have a clue! I'll go check it out.

Hmm. No the mouse pad itself has no on/off switch.

FN combination? You mean are there keys which might turn if on and off? I'm not aware of there being any..so I'm not sure if it does. I'll try to find out.

If that's what you were asking...not sure because I'm not into the technical side of computers (that's why I'm here! :p)

    Thanks MJL.

It's probably still works fine. You just need to post a picture of your laptop keyboard including touchpad here for someone to show you what to push. There must be a combination of buttons to turn the pad on or off if there is no dedicated button for it right at the pad location.

Hahahahaha. I just went to double check the laptop. Had a look around the bottom..and nope no button there...

So I looked at the touch pad again and it's right above it :/ I haven't noticed it before as a button. I'm glad I came in here before getting someone to look at it !
