I have narrowed down what laptop I need and there down to the dv5000z or the v2000z. I want to make sure which is better, and not make the wrong decision.

    dv5000z:
    15.4" widescreen
    AMD Turion ML-40(2.2 Ghz)
    512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
    ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports
    DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    FREE Upgrade to 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/125HSM!!
    12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
All come to 917.25 before tax

I can see the positives of having a better screen and a faster processor since the v2000z can only go up to the ML-37 and has a smaller screen, but hows the portability with the dv5000z?

    v2000z:
    14.0 WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x768)
    AMD Turion ML-37(2.0 Ghz)
    512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)
    ATI RADEON(R) XPRESS 200M w/productivity ports
60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
FREE Upgrade from DVD to DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    FREE Upgrade to 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/125HSM!!
    12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Total price comes to 771.25 before tax.

Hows the the durability of the v2000z? Many of the reviews showed some, but how is it to the student who constantly moves around with it? If their is anything I should change, i will see what I can do.

Do you need 15'' inch screen? There is virtually no other difference, except for the video card (dv5000z has the option to have 128mb dedicated memory, while v2000z has 128mb shared).
I suggest you get 5400 rpm HDD and upgrade the memory after market. The CPU will not bring you any performance increase (Ml37 versus ML40) but a faster hard drive and more RAM will substantially improve the overall performance of the notebook
v2000z is lighter than dv5000z, which may be an issue if you carry it too much

Features aside, I believe the dv2000 is made by Quanta, whereas the dv5000 is made by Compal. If that's the case, my opinion is to go with the dv5000.
I'll check further on if the 2000 is made by Quanta.

Ok, then the v2000z = L2000 which is a v2000z that is black and with Livestrong on the back. So pretty much its the v2000z that is black and gives you some added accesories. Im totally for what their foundation is so im no evil person. I just want to make sure that the laptop that I buy is worth my money.

wow...didn't realize that there was no dv1000z! i prefer the design and build of teh dv5000z personally...if you are a frequent traveler, and was hoping to use your computer to watch dvds and such on planes, then perhaps you should consider the v2000z. also, you might want to see them in stores to check out their build yourself to get a better understanding of things like its ergonomics, screen, keyboard, weight, etc....

ejl, did you mean the L2000 as everyone has said? I have gone to costco many times as they have both the v2000z and the dv5000z. I wanted to make sure also if the double layer burner was worth it or not since most likely I will be getting a burner for my desktop?

not exactly...i know that hp notebooks have more media features than the compaqs. i thought that there was something like the dv1000t except with the turion. the L2000 seems to be the compaq with a different paintjob, with those added media features. i don't know if the dual layer burner is necessary if you are planning to do most of your burning on your desktop. but if you think that you will actually use it in your notebook, then definitely get it.

How do you get Compaq out of 'HP Special Edition'? The Compaq equavilent the HP "DV1000Z" is the V2000Z.

i am not saying that it isn't essentially a dv1000. i just looked at the pictures, and the chassis looks more like the chassis of the v2000z instead of the dv1000. it's more blocky and has a thicker lid like the compaq as opposed to the dv1000. specifically, if you look at where the speakers are, the dv1000 slopes, while the compaq has a flat edge. if you look at the l2000, that has a flat edge, not the slope.

Yes you are correct, the L2000 shares the V2000Z's chassis. I am unsure about the quality between though. I would imangine it would be HP quality, since it bears the HP logo.

I can check, but if they share the same chassis, they are most likely the same computer, but with different names.
Remember, neither HP nor Compaq actually make any of these computers, they are just branded.
