I wonder how much a CDROM weighs? It might sound retarded, but is there anyway you can take the CD-ROM out of the laptop to shave some weight off?
Though, if it only weighs like 0.05pds, I rather not of course.

The CD drive, you mean? It's probably pretty insignificant in the overall weight of the laptop. Laptop optical drives are probably measured in grams or ounces for weight.

HP quote 180grams for the 2510P's 9.5mm UJ-852s optical drive. Feels pretty light.

You have found one of the biggest secrets in notebook weight reduction optical drives can add 5+ ounces to the weight of notebook... :p

But seriously it isn't worth it removing a notebook's optical drive to save weight; you will never notice the reduction in weight unless you are a scale. Plus once you remove the drive the notebook chassis tends to feel a little hollow.

Now if you are asking about removing the optical drive and replacing it with a extra hard drive then you might notice some weight increase.

my dv4t came with a very light cap for plugging in the slot for the cd rom to save weight.

My cd rom drive came out very easily via the lever on the bottom just like removing the battery.

With the cd-rom in my laptop weights 5.2 lbs
without the cd-rom + the plastic weight saver cap it is 4.8 lbs
