    do you have to do anything special to mantain an SSD drive to work as well as it can for as long as it can such as with an HDD

    Most current consumer MLC SSDs have their own technologies that require minimal user effort such as garbage collection. It would help if you told us which SSD you were considering and what OS you're using so that you could get more specific instructions. Generally though, don't defrag it.
