The latch on my new HP has a "rattle" to it when i tap on the touch pad to click. It's super annoying.

I'm trying to decide if I want to poke around and see what I can do about it or if I should tell HP. Does opening the laptop void the warranty?

I'm pretty savvy mechanically (I'm a mechanical engineer and had many "wrench" jobs) and have been building computers for years so i'm not worried about it just the warranty i guess.

Thoughts? Anyone else have this annoyance?

Anybody have any comment on if it voids the warranty at least :)?

    Thanks.

Stupid question, but are you sure it's the latch? The release button is a few inches away at least and shouldn't be rattling when you double tap the pad.

Can't comment if the warranty voids or not, but I'd say that the HDD and memory panels are designed to be self-servicable for upgrades. Prying the case apart might be a different story.

Positive it's the latch. Very light pressure on the release switch stops the rattle.

And You can't get at the latch through the panels, so i figure I need to go "pry apart the case".

I could always talk to HP but i hate the thought of being "laptopless" for however long it would be over something this silly, although annoying.

Thats a great page. So I suppose HP is cool with you doing that? They don't have some kind of warranty seal or anything?

Did you find "Top Cover Removal" under "FRU Remove/Replace"? I think that's your best bet. Note that you have to do some other part removal prep before actually removing the top cover.

It's gonna be a lot of work though. I don't envy you.

Definitely looks like a pain in the ass. You're right about it being a lot of work. I do enjoy taking stuff apart though :)

I'll send HP an email too. It really is a VERY annoying rattle as i like to use the touch pad to "click".

    Thank you for the links.

I also noticed that when closed it doesn't close properly. The left side (where it rattles) is not latched as "tightly" as the right side and it vibrates/rattles when closed. It's super annoying.

Emailed HP about this. Apparently they will do a clean wipe on my hard drive for a physical problem. This is ridiculous.

This laptop is a week old.

Hmmm, My 9500t doesnt rattle whatsoever. However, the keyboard spacebar creates extremely loud clicks and the backspace squeeks.

Well thats not good. Now i'm jealous, aside from the spacebar thing ya know. My keyboard is excellent, we could maybe have a decent notebook between us.

Well, I ripped it apart, (HUGE pain in the ass, i wholeheartedly do not recommend it to anyone) and found the latch issue and fixed it.

So i'm kinda happy, no thanks to HP.

Also, occasionally my spacebar on my keyboard "lags" and ruins my typing. Is this a common problem?
