Bout to place my order for the new HP HDX16 the option for blu-ray is $100 more, at this time who on here thinks the option is or isnt worth $100? Think blu-ray burners will be out soon enough? or the price for blu-ray movies will go down soon? Gonna place my order tonight but whenever you get a chance please put in your input...thank you.

Also maybe for those of you that have it.....have any problems with it yet? it read all blu-rays?

Are you kidding me? No it's not worth it. All you're getting is the next generation of disc storage capabilities and highly defined video viewing. Who wants that? I mean when DVDs become obsolete, no one wants to be prepared for that.

    LMAO!

But seriously infamous who's to say Bluray won't be obsolete in like 3 years?

Even though I'm all for Bluray I really don't have much faith in sony and the BDA to be honest. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Bluray just ups and fails.

Glad to know that people wonder the same things I do. I was debating my Dad earlier about this issue and it just kind of ended in a stalemate.

Aren't the new HDX laptops meant to watch HD videos though? It makes sense if that's what you're going to use it for...

Blu-Rays definitely look better. I don't think it's hit the magic price point yet where it's going to be mass adopted. If you think you'd be interested in watching Blu-Ray discs, then it's probably worth it. If not, then no.

Blu-Ray is an excellent format. The quality and details are simply amazing. The discs not only store more information, but allow for faster disc reading. Go to your nearest Wal-mart and watch the sample BD on demo. AMAZING. Sure Blu-Ray might take a tumble, but look at our economy. Come on, the government just loaned out $85 Billion to AIG. Did I mention we're at war? That's like what? a million or two a day?

I think it's worth it if you plan on keeping your new laptop for at least a couple of years. But if you change laptops like underwear, or you don't ever watch movies on it, then maybe it's not. And if you DO get a Blu-Ray drive, make **** sure you upgrade to the 1680x1050 screen or it won't even be worth it. I laughed hard when I saw a post from some poor sap in another forum who was complaining because he got a Blu-Ray upgrade and he didn't notice much better video quality compared to a regular DVD - and it was because he got the 1280x800 screen!

Um....try more like $720 million a day! http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/09/23/4049/ So the $85 million that they used to bail out AIG is equivelant to what is spent in like 3 hours for the war.

It certainly won't hurt you to get Blu-Ray, and if your finances can handle it, go for it. But, keep in mind, that there is a prevailing school of thought amongst many that Blu-Rays will never obselesce DVD, and that if anything, people will go straight from DVD to the next wave of entertainment storage, whatever that turns out to be, ie flash, etc.

It's all opinion at this point. I'm not interested until you can get the BR drive and burner as a 50 dollar add on and the disks aren't more than a buck a piece.

DVD still has a lot of life left in it, with upscaling technologies improving, and slowing Blu-ray's adoption, and HD downloads gaining speed as well. But like I said, it's all opinion right now.

I also don't like the DRM. And I'm a major opponent of DRM technologies, and Sony & the BDA are ALL about the DRM. So that's another strike against it for me.

I was going based upon information I had from a few years ago. $720 million is a lot. lol. I could buy a new computer with that kind of money and not have to debate whether or not Blu-Ray is worth it. :) Then again, I would probably just send everyone free Blu-Ray drives.

The price of BD-R media makes it not worth it.

Blu-ray is definitely worth $100 if you have a large hd tv to hook it up to. It looks much better. I dont't really notice the difference on the smaller monitor though. Netflix does have blu-ray discs available for an extra $1 a month fee. There is just not a big selection yet. The nice part about having BR on the computer instead of external is that if I take those netflix discs on a trip with me, I don't have to worry about what format I rented the disc in. Both regular and BR will be watchable on the computer. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for BR though. It's not that much of an improvement.

Its worth it for me. With 2 young kids I can't really watch loud movies at night so I watch with my headphones as loud as I want in the comfort of my bed

It's worth it to me. I don't buy DVD anymore, just blu-ray. BTW I paid 200.00 for my bd-option. If Lenovo had a reasonable cost for a drive, I'd be in that forum.
