I'm only speaking for the DV series because I don't know how the other machines work.

But, as we know when you close the lid on the DV series in windows it will shut down, sleep or hibernate depending on what you've setup.

What I was wanting to know, does any body see a reason why the notebook doesn't turn back on again when one opens the lid? Just like macs do.

There must be some switch/button that is getting (de)pressed when the lid is closed. So what I wondering is, could the BIOS be programmed to sense for this "button". I wonder because something is checking to see if the IR is being used to turn the notebook on, so why not for the button?

I just think it would be a nice feature. (Of course if it can be done, then a setting in the BIOS should be used if one doesn't like the feature)

I know some features can be added to the BIOS because at first the DV series didn't allow the stopping of the beeping quickbuttons.

If you do like the idea of this feature, please take the time to contact HP and let them know.

    Cheers!

Both my DV series pc's will start up when I open the lid if it was set to sleep mode. The hibernate and off modes require pressing the power button. In HP's case lid button operates more like a signaling device and in a way it makes sense as you are interested to conserve the most power when in hibernate/complete off states. There is another thing to consider is that there is a certain OS-independent control of the switches behavior, for example the display switching off when you close the lid, no matter what your settings are.

I didn't realise about the sleep mode because I never use it, I only ever use hib mode. But as for the other things you've said... The IR still allows for the turning on of the machine in hib/off mode. So if the machine does turn on when opening the lid in sleep mode, then the feature should/could still be allowed for the hib/off mode.

vap87: Thanks, but we're not having problems. I just would like the extra feature of when I open the lid, the notebook turns on even if the notebook was set to hib/off. (Normally you have to press the power button)
