they are offering the new lightscribe in the notebooks and I was wondering what the difference is between the dual layer dvd burner and the lightscribe. Is lightscribe dual layer? and what is dual layer. I ordered my r4000 through HP already, but I was thinking of cancelling this order and reordering it witht the lightscribe. any suggestions on how to cancel and reorder. I appreciate any input. Thanks!

I agree, not even worth the upgrade of $25!...At first notice of the new addition to the zv6000 options, I thought I'd change my config., but after doing my homework on the issue...I normally buy Verbatim 100pk of DVD+R for less than $30, yet the VERY cheapest available of lightscribe DVD+R is $45+ for only 30!! That's SIX TIMES THE PRICE!!

Very nifty technology advancement, however, as the media gets cheaper you could always decide to get an external drive later w/Lightscribe for not much more than normal drives.

Dual layer is DVD-9 format it is a disk that holds 8.5gb's of data. They cost 5-6 dollars each verses 40cents for a regular dvd. They are nice to have but of no real economical advantage at this time.Alightscribe basically requires a special compact disc and can burn pretty designs on the top of the disc .i prefer a sharpie[ :D]as the lightscribe cd-r's aer about 60cents each and the dvd-r are like$1.50-$1.80 each verses 40 cents for a regular dvd-r.So for me atleast the cost is not practical right now but its your money to spend and its your decision

It's nice to have option for lightscribe but there are two problems with lightscribe at the moment 1)as someone already mentioned the media for lightscribe is expensive. 2)the time it takes to burn the label is somewhere around 22 minutes, atleast according to the last review I read.

The cost of the media is expected to drop with time and the time it takes to burn the label is supposed to drop as firmware updates become available.

with lightscribe you can burn your own label on to the surface of the disk with your drive but you'll need lightscribe disks i think

I disagree 100%...I've cancelled 2 orders in the last couple weeks with NO problems...HP has phenomenal service eveytime I've called...& the only PCs I've even purchased over the last 5-7 years have been by Compaq.

Even IF they give you a "hard time", you can always utilize their no hassle return policy after it has shipped & in the meantime place your new order (Even though it WONT come to this).

well i was reading the specs on the lightscribe on Compaqs site and it looks like the lightscribe drive is able to read double layer DVD+R, but not write double layer. If it doesn't write double layer then I wouldn't be interested. Can someone verify that it doesn't write double layer, cuz the HP salesguy on the phone told me it did.

Yes, I contacted Hp yesterday regarding this matter, & they confirmed that it doesn't write to DL. That made up my mind pretty quick, too.

HP now has DL working on the Lightscribe drive. Anyone that has a Lightscribe drive that does not burn DL will be exchanged free by HP.

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes, can lightscribe drives also use regular, non-lightscribe media or if I buy a lightscribe drive do I have to always use the expensive stuff?

I wouldnt think the way disks are burned from a LS disk to a nromal dvd is an different..only difference is the way the burner can etch the image on to the face of the disk..
so use any disks u want

You can use normal DVD's for regular burning, but ofcourse you cannot use lightscribe to burn labels directly on to these DVD's.

Thanks, that was about what I figured, and I thought it was a ludicrous concept to make a drive that could only write to your own media, except for the fact that it would make perfect sense from lightscribe's point of view and would help them move tons of media. Again, thanks for the help and I'm glad I was wrong.
