    Hi all

I willing to buy an HP DV5278, it has good specs and price.

The only down thing is that it doesn't have a Lightscribe DVD writer .

Is there a way to replace the original DVD writer with another one that has Lightscribe before buying? or should I just forget about Lightscribe ?

    Thanks in advance.

i have a dv1000t and you can remove the dvd drive and im sure its the same way on yours

but if you dont find anything you could always get an external drive

i was reading a review with a comp with lightscribe and it said it takes it 29 minutes to burn a image and its only black and white so i dunno if lightscribe is a good idea maybe wait till they get faster but its up to you

The easiest and cheapest solution would be to get an external burner. They also tend to be somewhat faster than an notebook dvd burner.

If you go with a complex design, it does take about 25 minutes. If you go with a more simple design (see below), it takes much less time.

A design such as the one below would take around 25-30 minutes:

I happen to really like being able to have clean designs on my CD's rather then having to use a Sharpie... guess it's a matter of personal preference.

it would be really cool if it was in color.

i was gonna get the lightscribe cause on the hp website it said free upgrade but it would add 50 dollars so i called up customer suport and they said it is free but the dvd and cd burner is extra so i was like ur not getting it for free then are you if you gotta pay for something else

    Thanks guys for the replies.

I guess I will be fine with a normal dvd burner for now and maybe I will upgrade it later or buy an external one since they are getting cheaper now.

    Hi All,

    Darth,
The upgrade refers to upgrading a standard dvd burner to the Lightscribe capable unit, which usaually costs a little more than the standard burner. You still have to buy a standard dvd burner.

    x totti x,
The lightscribe is simply a built in dvd burner that has the ability to burn images in the label side of lightscribe disks. It is pretty kewl, but it is not a neccesity. It does take a little time to burn the image side of the disks, but then the labeling is permanent and looks nice. It takes about three or four minutes to burn a text title into a lightscribe disk. It came with my preconfigured dv5030. I would still have bought this machine even if it had not had the lightscribe. Since I have it though I have found that when I make picture disks or program disks I do burn the titles on the disks.

You can always get a external dvd writer.

Question that may help people decide between the Lightscribe and a external dvd writer..

HOW MUCH ARE THE LIGHTSCRIBE DISCS A PIECE ?

Do they ever go on "sale" like regular discs?.

What is the price of Lightscribe discs in a 100pk?
