I have the dv2500t similar to the 9500 I believe except LAN,audio and modem. I have the nvidia card and no fingerprint reader. I installed sabayon linux and everything worked out of the box.
I had to install Kmixer and change keyboard layout via GUI to get the quickplay buttons to work. Although fwd, rev, and stop dont work, only volume/mute.

Even Compiz works great! I just updated the Nvidia drivers, although I dont think its needed. Also my webcam worked at one time, but of course I messed with it and broke it lol. It still shows up at HP Webcam so I will need to look at that.

A few people have done it.
Go on the Ubuntu forums and search for the term DV6500 and a bunch of threads will come up. The DV6500 is basically the same as the DV9500.

Fiesty Fawn 7.04 will install using the alternate text based installer, but it won't run unless you mess with the graphics. The solution is to install the Gutsy Gibbon kernal. Me? I'm waiting until October when Gutsy Gibbon comes with the next release. Then I'll try again.

If you are wanting to run Linux without replacing Windows vista, and without dual booting, you can Linux using VMWare Workstation (or download prebuilt distros for the free VMPLayer). It will then run in a window under Vista.

There is a very thorough thread at ubuntuforums.org as well, it seems people have gotten most everything to work.

ok... so i finally installed ubuntu 7.10 on my dv9500,
and contrary to other peoples experiences, my install worked perfectly from the live cd, and the only drivers i had to install were the nVidia drivers and the HD sound drivers

I had setup Gutsy on my laptop (dv2500t) about a week ago. It setup brilliantly and had drivers for everything except the webcam. Everything else was working fine. For work related purposes, I then had to setup windows xp again. So, I'll probably be setting it up again under a dual boot scheme. But yeah, Gutsy was able to detect and setup all the hardware correctly except the webcam.
