I am experiencing pretty much constant clicking-like noise on the left side of my dv7. I understand this is classic sound of a dying HDD. However, since it seems to be coming from either my Optiarc BD-ROM drive (which I have had problems with in the past) or right below it, I'm not sure about that diagnosis. I would open it up myself to look for the HDD so I can be sure whether that is the failing part or not but I couldn't get the battery out and I'm not sure what the warranty allows for in terms of DIY anyhow.

Under that big cover on the bottom. In relitive position to you using it you would find it under the bottom right side of the palmrest. Is it a wd3200bevt by the way? You can find out by running hdtune

It is a wd3200bevt and it appears to be on the opposite side. I guess it's safe to conclude then that what I'm hearing is not the hard drive. I am now moving beyond the scope of this thread but have you other head of other people having chronic clicking from an optical drive? I haven't found anything with the search function.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Try updating the BIOS of your computer. That is available at hp.com/support
If the issue still persist contact HP, since this is a new notebook, there is a possibility that they will send you a replacement DVD drive for free. Just ready your credit card information, because they may ask for a collateral for the replacement part, but don't worry they will not charge you anything once you have sent the part that is replaced.
