I'm in college right now and one day I lowered my screen as to not to tmpt my roommate into looking at my windows and stuff. I went to take a shower, came back, and my screen was in a viewing position. The only reason i didn't close it was because I have some stuff I'd like to get continuous updates on on my computer. I was wondering if there was a way to basically lock the computer, without really shutting it off or preventing it from doing it's thing as it does normally. I'd like to be able to unlock it with a fingerprint scan. My laptop is an HP HDX16T.

Remember i don't want to put it to sleep or anything, just to lock it to prevent anyone from actually using it, like locks the mouse, the keyboard and stuff.

the easyest way to lock your computer is to press the windows key and L at the same time. doing this will NOT close any apps you might have running... i hope this helps you

I hope you also learned a good lesson about roommates and college life. Although I never lived in dorm rooms, I did live in barracks and it didn't take me long to realize that anything I left out (and put away too) was essentially public property: Lock everything! Even if it is only for a moment. And that's especially important if you have multiple roommates with lots of friends. Your stuff will disappear--or even worse get broken--and no one will know what happened to it.

If you always remember these important points, you will never lose your cool!

When there's a lot people hanging around, get a Kensington lock and secure your computer somewhere solid.

A Kensington lock is a start, but it's only a level one (friends and family) security procedure and definitely shouldn't be relied upon to stop a determined thief. Considering the shenanagans that go on in a college dorm, I wouldn't leave my laptop out for one second. When I leave it goes with me, or into a locked cabinet.
