I have an old zx5000 which is from around the same era that I use for streaming stuff to my family room tv.

I have a desktop back from 2004, that I still use. It runs like a champ.

I remember those models also had the desktop version of the Pentium 4's and used to run hot when a couple of friends had that laptop.

Let me welcome you to the Notebook Review forum, Mr.Comptronic.

This is a very technologically engulfed community consisted of people that sought solidarity just as yourself. We all love newbs! :)

My first HP laptop was the ZV5430US. It held up very well, but ultimately became obsolete for me.

    Plan on upgrading anytime soon?

I do plan on upgrading soon. My friends tell me that I shouldn't because everything I do on a laptop can be done on a new Droid smartphone. I said I would still like to have a new laptop anyway.

There is only a few requirements I'd like to have for my next laptop. I'd like to have Windows 7, at least 4Gb of RAM, backlit keyboard, possible touch screen, or "swivel" display. I hate netnooks, they're to small for me.

This is completely off the subject but how do you get a signature for this forum? I couldn't find that option anywhere in the User Control Panel.

Well I looked at the default specs of your notebook and it doesn't look that bad. You could install some more ram depending on how much you currently have and buy a license of Windows 7 and use that. But that's only if you feel like holding on to that notebook for much longer.
I have Windows 7 on a 6 year old desktop like I said in the previous post and it's doing just fine running windows 7 on a P4 3.0 w/ HT, 2GB ram, and a Ati x300.

I thought Windows 7 needed so requirements such as at least 1Gb of RAM (2Gb preferred), an updated ActiveX, and other things.

A while back when Windows 7 first came out, I did some research of my laptop and found that it wouldn't be compatible with Windows 7. My laptop can only be upgraded to 1Gb of RAM (512Mb max per slot). Also, my mousepad no longer works, I have to press extra hard on the keyboard to type, and I always have to keep it plugged in. It's time for a new one, you think?

If so, then I'd say get a new laptop. You can wait until Thanksgiving, and or around Christmas to get a good deal on a laptop from major retailers. But there's always coupons and certain discounts on the web from HP.com.
If you're looking for a 14-15in notebooks, I'd check out HP's line of laptops. Just make sure you read reviews on this site and do your homework before biting the bullet and ordering.
