For those of you who have owned a laptop for a while that may have had problems, what has been your support history been like? Did you use just the standard warranty, or did you have one of the extended service packs with the faster service? How well were you treated?

Well, when I had my zv6000 (Standard Warranty), the service/support was great. Their support is based in India, however, and it is sometime difficult to understand, but luckily that never happened. They always offered a resonable answer and if they can't fix it, you can send in your notebook, and get it returned within a week. I give HPs support an A!

Oh yea, the laptop I am looking at (really loving the internal layout of this thing) is the nc6230. Any chance you know if there is a Atheros based card out there that is compatible with its whitelist?

I have a Pavilion zt1000 series that's 2-3 years old now. It had a few problems with the hard drive and motherboard and a few other components I can't remember, but service was always fast and pleasant to deal with. I tended to use their online chat and usually got an RMA and a pickup scheduled rather quickly (they would listen to what I had done already and didn't run me through their entire script every time)
I'd definately buy an HP again, if only they would get their screen resolution out of the stone ages. -

Looks like I am going to buy that nc6230 after all (seems like a very good value and its IN STOCK). Should I extended the warrany past 3 years? If I don't do it now, can I purchase a extended warranty during the current warranty period?

I'm looking at an HP notebook as well, and I could have sworn I read on their site a clause that states extended Care Pack services can be purchased anytime within the original warranty period - can't find the page now - sorry
I can tell you I'm planning to get my notebook with "Pick-up and Return with Accidental Damage Protection" Care Pack upgrade: http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/11149-0-0-225-121.html -

I had an HP for about a year, I was very satisfied with their support. Better than Dell in my opinion.
I once had to get it repaired for a motherboard issue - it was fixed in three days. They overnighted it there (sent me a label), fixed it the next, and overnighted it back to me. Very impressive!
And true, they are based in India, but if you can understand them (most of which you can), they are very nice and helpful. -
If you do purchase the nc6230 don't forget to give us a little review

I have had excellent support since I bought my HP, granted only bought it in September of 05, but it's far, far exceeded my expectations.

Togus - did you purchase a consumer or business notebook?

crap, looks like I won't have a fun toy over the weekend. Appears Monday is the date, now I just hope that someone is here to sign for it.

good service, got a rma in 10 minutes, they even paid for the fed ex pickup.
not as easy as sony, sony includes the sticker + a rma web link whenever you buy something but not free. -
davez82 - what kind of warranty/care-pack do you have?

I had very good experience with HP in replacing my HDD. Just opened their online chat and gave the details, they called and confirmed with address and other stuff in 10 min. It was sent overnight by fedex with return shipping label too.
I can not say samething about Dell and Toshiba( dell was the worst of all).
Looking at an HP/compaq lappy, how is support?
