I'm looking at a laptop for school. I've been looking closely at the dv1000, V2000, as well as the 700m. I have had a Dell desktop for 3 going on 4 years now and have never had any problems. When the Dell is customized to the specs of the dv1000 for example, the Dell ends up being quite a bit more expensive, which has me leaning towards the HP or Compaq.

As I've said, the laptop doesn't need to be fancy but portability is key. I'd also like to be able to play the odd computer game as well. But I'm certainly not a "hardcore" gamer.

    What would you guys suggest[?]

in your case, since you are not a hardcore gamer, i'd just suggest going with the one with the dedicated graphics card, not intel extreme graphics or w/e, as far as i am concerned the v2000 or whatever its called has a dedicated card. If they are all intel extremes, go for the dv1000. Great multimedia features, cheap, better than compaq, i've heard compaqs arent that great, even though they are within hp. HP has a good record if i am not mistaken, and they are cheaper than dells, like you said.
