I had another thread with this problem in it but the title was different so I thought I'd create another one. How do you fix the connector to the webcam? Is it just "unscrew the computer and connect it?" Or are there any warranty-voiding tabs or glue or something I have to break to get in? Also, does Best Buy do HP warranty work for free? I really don't have to time to mail the computer to HP, and frankly, I don't trust them to fix it anyway...

download the service manual from hp. it could be the connection at the camera itself behind the bezel at the top or under the top cover where it connects to the mobo. should not be to hard. No there are no void warranty tabs.look at the modding thread I think speedking has posted pictures of both the screen and mobo. good luck

Do you have any kind of onsite warranty coverage?

Best Buy definitely won't do it for free, unless you bought it there and got the worthless Geek Squad plan.

If you want to try doing it yourself, just hope that the bad connection is on the motherboard end. If it is, then it's just a matter of opening the case and reseating the cable.

Based on what you said in the other thread, there are three possible problems. First, the cable could be badly plugged in at the motherboard in which case you need to open the case and reseat it. Second, the cable could be badly plugged in at the webcam in which case you need to dismantle the display bezel and reseat it. Finally, the cable itself can be broken in which case you need to disconnect the cable from both ends and either repair it or replace it.

The motherboard is the easiest one to check -- try that first and see what happens. Read the disassembly manual and be absolutely sure that you've disconnected all power sources (for some reason, a lot of people think it's OK to leave the battery in while taking the machine apart and then come here with problems due to short circuits).

The way those dongles from the display panel go through the hinge and taking into account how many times a day or in week, that a notebooks lid is opened and closed... its a wonder that there are not more issues of wifi, camera and display panel failures.

Just izzy's two-cents, but IMO, sturdy, well-built/designed hinges are often taken for granted and not thought of when purchasing a notebook PC.

I also find that the fingerprint reader is also disconnected... it used to work too. Well okay, when I get time I'll take it apart.

Where is this modding thread you speak of?
