One of the hinges on my nc4000 has worked loose. There's maybe 5-6mm of play on it. It looks as if the star-headed screw at the back might tighten it, but can it really be as simple as that?

Maybe you should try it and tell us. Check out the manuals for the laptop if you need to.

If only it were that simple, vassil_98 (Thanks for replying to my question; I appreciate it). The previous owner has hashed the screws, but from the Maintenance and Service Guide, I see that they're Torx T8 screws and that they "secure the display hinge covers to the notebook." The question now is, if and when I can get the hinge covers off, can I fix the hinge? The screw damage suggests that the original owner had trouble with one or both of the hinges, but seems to have managed to fix it to an acceptable level. The manual talks a lot about the hinge covers, but never mentions the hinges themselves.

I am no hinge expert but I've heard people talk about the screws that tighten the hinges to the body of the laptop. They should be under the plastics just beneath the screen (above the keyboard).
Other than that, try the hashed screws somewhat harder. You should probably opt for undoing them so that you can change them.

There was a thread about Dell, might be of help: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=53390
    and one about Asus: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=28920
