Hello
The hinges on my dv2699 have suddenly gone loose. They are not broken but are not able to support the weight of the lid. It needs to be inclined all the way to the back or be supported by some vertical support to keep it in a viewable position. Just wondering if the complete hinges need to be replaced in such a situation or is there some sort of padding around it which might have given way and replacing it might fix it up?
Thanks a lot for your replies in advance.
Cheers
Imran

There is several possibilities what may have happened.
First you need service manual ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295820.pdf )
On the manual page 85 you see the hinges. Sometimes the support beams that connect display to the hinges, they break instead. Sometimes the whole mechanism breaks away from the display itself, basically plastic parts inside the display lid shatter and the hinge mechanism is loose inside.
Both of those might be caused by extreme heat (especially if that's an AMD machine with Nvidia graphics), the hinges themselves become stiff (heat spoils the grease) and then moving the display eventually causes the above issues, either or both of them.
You need to open the display, probably possible to do without removing the display from computer but easier if you do, and check what parts are actually broken.
Loose hinges is the same as broken?
