Maddening keyboard layout problem. Solutions requested.

For some unknown reason, my new Dv9740ca notebook has a tiny left shift key (in order to add some symbol key beside the Z) and I cannot reach it easily during typing. This is unlike every other keyboard I have worked on. Is there any way to reassign key function on computers? I will never need the symbol key I keep hitting by accident, and I would rather change it to a shift key.
