Hi guys my DV-9428 usually doesnt shut down i.e. I select shutdown and nothing will happen for like 3-5 minutes then the sidebar will disappear and then in another minute the windows logging off screen will appear and then in another three minutes the windows shut down screen will appear.

Here is where the story gets juicy. The shut down screen will remain for up to TWENTY minutes and then either the blue screen which displays the error message of "Driver Power State Failure..." appears the actual error message can be seen below.

OR the computer just returns to the regular Windows Vista log in screen and if you choose to shutdown from there 90% it shuts down quickly and normally.

However, after both instances once you reach the desktop the message "Windows has just recovered from and unexpected shutdown" and of course when you search the knowledge base etc. nothing relating to the error can be found.

This is mega annoying and sometimes forces me to shutdown the laptop by holding down the power button which im sure is not good for the laptop.
Why is it that the computer cannot just shut down quickly and normally?
What could be causing this problem?

On a side note-Sometimes my machine locks up and I try ti restart it only to face the same issues. So I have to manually shut down. I am going INSANE!

Many thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide!

Try going into safe mode first and then try to do the same thing and see if you have the same problem. If you don't then you have some driver issue.

sounds like some buggy software or a driver issue. I´ve had a similar issue with my previous laptop, and the problem in my case was a badly programmed network driver.
maybe you wanna try shutting down, and killing threads in the taskmanager. if if you have some buggy software you´ll find it this way.

    Thanks for the replies.
Tried the safe mode route a few times and nothing changed.

I will try killing everything in task manager and see if it works. However, should I do that before attempting to shutdown or after the problem?

So the same problem in safe mode? Try switching between battery and adapter power, so only one at a time. You can also try "diagnostic startup" under msconfig, but if you have the same issue under safemode it makes me think it could be more than a driver issue.

I killed everything in task manager except for the touchpad and it has been shutting down fine for exactly one week I still have my fingers crossed though.
I also updated the bios at first the computer was running pretty hot and slow but now all it well but I still have my fingers crossed like I said.

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR REPLIES AND HELP!!!
    REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!
